Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival (+HKAFF)

clock November 13, 2008 21:58 by author Joon Han

I'm such a lazy blogger, ha ha, but I absolutely have to say that I was very impressed by the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival (which is still running/galloping). We (me, Peter Davis, Priscilla [Peter's girlfriend] and Wai Hoong) were treated like VIPs upon arrival in Taipei. Well, the TGHFF team was scouring the airport for the Yeo Joon Han of our opening scene but once they came to terms with the idea that I look like me, they took great care of us. Our film was well publicised/blogged about so we had a sold out screening on 7 Nov 2008. In an ironic reflection of the film, the Taiwanese subtitles worked tremendously well, tickling most of the audience from start to finish. At the end of the film, came the tough questions, all the more tough because I attempted to answer them in my home-use banana Mandarin.

Even though it was my first time in Taipei, I felt strangely at home, probably because everyone's Chinese but also because there's always been some Taiwanese element in my life for as long as I can remember. It's the same with our trip to Hong Kong for the Asian Film Festival. All the more painful then that I had to struggle so hard to find the right Mandarin/Cantonese words to express my thoughts. I need to learn more Mandarin and Cantonese. What I know is insufficient for even the most basic discussion about film. Having Peter Davis (half-banana, half-European) and Wai Hoong (complete banana) standing next to me was not enough of a consolation, ha ha.

I wonder why Malaysians are not more excited about the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival and the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival. To me, it was like showing my silly film to my extended family and to old friends I didn't know I had. In Hong Kong, I was in fact showing the film to old friends I did know I had and am grateful for still having.

"Sell Out!" has premiered in Zurich!

clock September 29, 2008 08:02 by author Joon Han

The screening went pretty well and there were, thankfully, laughter and good vibes from the audience. Although I had prepared a well-structured one-page introduction to rival my drunken introduction in Venice, ha ha, in the end I chickened out and just said:

'My friend drove all the way from Germany to see my film and he asked me if there's anything he should know about the film. I said, "The less the better."

However, I should warn you that "Sell Out!" has been accused of having "forced humour" as well as "shapeless direction" and being "20 minutes overlong."

All I can say is: sit back, relax and lower your expectations.

Thank you."

Joon Han in Zurich

clock September 28, 2008 02:25 by author Joon Han

Thanks for all the great vibes from Padua :-) I'm finally in Zurich. It's a little lonely here... I lugged Reel 4 of our print here (to replace the earlier damaged one) and am waiting for our screening tomorrow night (which clashes with a gala screening of old "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"!). I hope it will go okay. Am nervous. And hungry. And sleepy. And poor from this expensive wifi connection! ha ha.

After Zurich, I will return to Bangkok to really finalise our soundtrack. I promise!!!

By the way, James Wong (our script supervisor and assistant-everything) asks if you guys could go to imdb.com and write some nice "user comments" about SELL OUT! That would help our film move up in google and cover up that one nasty review we had in Variety! In fact, if anyone has the time, please go to the Variety review and make some comments ha ha.

Thanks!!! I'll write more when I get to a place with free wifi :-)

The Young Cinema Award

clock September 7, 2008 05:10 by author Joon Han

SELL OUT! has just won the Young Cinema Award for Alternative Vision from the Venice Film Festival! The Young Cinema jury is made up of 80 persons aged 18-25. The Alternative Vision award is the only one we qualified for (since we were not in the Main Competition). Too bad we didn't get the Critic's Week prize but that was decided by jury of only 3 people...

Back from Venice

clock September 5, 2008 03:52 by author Joon Han

so, anyway, we're all back from Venice! it was a crazy, wonderful, unexpected experience! the critics' week people were terrific and took great care of us and our audiences were such happy, joyful people (except from one old scrooge from a certain influential industry publication, ha ha) who seemed to love and support the film as if it were their own!
